Keeping Up with Life

Well...we are three weeks into the school year. We are all alive and surviving. Actually I guess we are doing more than surviving, so that's good. I was trying to be positive about this school year and thankfully, my optimism has paid off.
I pick up Wiggy from an alternate bus stop, then I head to the school and wait for Tubbs to get out. Then we drive over to Bubba's school and wait 10-15 minutes. I leave work at 2:30 and we usually pull into the house around 3:30pm.The first day of school Wiggy's bus was 30 minutes late, so then Tubbs was 30 minutes late after that. That meant I was also 15 minutes late for Bubba. I decided the next day I would try the pick-up line for Tubbs...and discovered that is pure hell. So the third day of school I told him to be a "walker" and I park in front of his school. Soooo much better.

This is how we entertain ourselves in the car, waiting for Bubba in front of his school.

Wiggy Update...
She loves school. However, she came home one day telling me she cried at school because she was missing her daddy. I know she is trying to milk it and luckily her teacher operates a lot like me. She got her laughing in no time and told her she was just like her brother, Bubba.
She loves riding the bus in the morning and waiting in line like a big girl. Luke waits until he sees her and brother get in the bus. After they get on the bus she likes to sit by her friend Zach who is in her class at school AND church.
By the 4th day of school, she was EXHAUSTED when I picked her up from the bus. As we waited to pick up Tubbs, she screamed for water and told me how hard Kindergarten was. Within a few minutes she was passed out and took a little nap while waiting for Bubba.
She has started AYSO soccer in the U5 group. She told me she didn't want to play, but I registered her anyways. I knew she'd love it.
She likes doing homework...until mom tries to help. She is having a more difficult time with her letters than the boys did, but we probably aren't working with her as much as we did with them either. I don't know. All she seems to be interested in is doing hair, playing with her ponies, watching TV and playing dress-up. :)
One of her art pieces that I saw at Back to School Night.....

Tubbs update.....
Two of his best friends now go to another school. (The school we were supposed to go to when they redrew the district boundaries.) We found a way to stay...even though Tubbs really wanted to go where his friends were. Lucky for us, Tubbs has the same teacher as last year and many of his friends he's known since he started school, are in class with him. The class sits at tables instead of desks and they each have an Acer notebook, where they do all of their classwork on Google Classroom. It's REALLY nice and Tubbs loves that part.
However, by the third day he was really down and missing his two best friends. One friend he sees at church and church activities, but we had to make sure that we stay in contact with his other friend, Sahil. Luckily I work with his mom and they live nearby. They have gotten together a few times, so I know he will adjust ok.
Tubbs is in the process of trying out for the 5/6 flag football team. Hopefully he will make the team because he seems to enjoy it. He finds out next week.

On Friday the kids decided they wanted to eat breakfast at school, so I walked them into school and sat with them while they ate. This is the first year our school has offered breakfast.
Tubbs and one of his BFF's at his buddy's party.
Tubbs is playing AYSO soccer as well and his first practice was the first day of school. (Talk about a crazy day!) His team practices twice a week at a park nearby, so I am loving that. He was a little nervous the first few practices, but now he has the hang of it. Hopefully he will make a few friends out of this. All of the boys are 10 and 11 and he is one of the younger boys, but one of the biggest.
Tubbs also plays the trumpet in the school band. Thankfully a friend from church has one he is letting us borrow so we don't have to rent or buy one. Very thankful. He starts band practice on Monday.
Something Tubbs typed up for Back to School Night...

Bubba update....
Bubba is loving Junior High. He eats lunch everyday with his friend Mitchell and sometimes a friend from church or a friend of Mitchell's. He sees his 8th grade friends from church, so he feels very comfortable and they take good care of him. He likes that he can buy items for lunch "ala carte" and that he can buy items from the snack bar. I gave him $2 and he bought three bags of Red Hot Cheetos and a bag of popcorn. Yum.
His elective this quarter is "Art" which he thought meant drawing, but he soon found out it's much more than that...and he isn't a fan. I had to take an Art class in college, so I can feel his pain. Good thing for him, his grade is 100% effort. His favorite class is History and that makes dad happy.

We met with the Special Ed director and a Speech Language Pathologist who works at an elementary school in the district, but specializes in stuttering. It was very promising so we are looking forward to what she can do with Bubba this school year. His issue is not necessarily called "stuttering" but something called "cluttering." Another SLP diagnosed this a few months ago and it's been interesting to learn more about it. One thing we have are looking into is a "Delayed Auditory Feedback" device, which is a hearing-aid-like gadget, that plays the stutterer's speech back to him, sometimes in a slightly altered form, after a split-second delay. In the meantime, we are trying out an app on our Iphones for "SpeechEasy" and he's been using the headphones. It's been amazing to see Bubba's face when he can talk clearly. His face just lights up.
I had to take a photo of a tab Bubba made for his school binder. Can you guess what he is trying to spell?

Well...three weeks down. Many more to come. I can't believe it's September. Before I know it, it will be Thanksgiving and Christmas. Like everyone in California, we are ready for the cooler weather.

Hot Mama Update....
I am working 6:30am - 2:30pm, so I can get the kids right after school. I really enjoy spending time with the kids in the afternoon...nagging them about homework and shuttling them to appointments and practices. I wouldn't have it any other way. :)
I haven't done any running or exercise since May'ish. I really do miss it, but the reason is two-fold;
One, It's too stinkin' hot to run anytime of the day.
Two, I haven't been feeling like myself. End of May I decided to see my primary doctor for pain in my chest and in my neck and jaw that began in April. Fast forward to September and I have seen way too many doctors. If I wasn't double covered with insurance, I think I would've given up on my body months ago. Since the last part of May, I have seen my primary care doctor five times, a cardiologist twice, a GI doctor and urologist once, and an orthopedist three times. I've had two chest x-rays, a CT scan of my chest, one MRI of the knee, two sets of blood work, an ultrasound of my kidneys, a Echo cardiogram, and EKG, and a treadmill stress test. In a few days I am going in for a CT scan of my abdomen. Yay for medical technology!
And what do I know? Not as much as I wish I knew.
My orthopedist believes my chest pain is/was costochondritis, which is an inflammation of a rib or the cartilage connecting a rib. It is a common cause of chest pain with no cause or cure. It kind of sucks feeling like you're having, what I imagine is a heart attack, all day long for months. Lucky for me, it started to subside a few weeks ago, but now I have some nagging pain in my left side/front. The GI doctor thinks it's still the costochondritis, but in another area. Whatever. I have MANY kidney stones now apparently. More than I had a year ago. My last x-ray report stated that I possibly have Medullary sponge kidney, which is a congenital disorder of the kidneys. I saw the urologist today and we are doing more test to see if blasting the kidneys is really the answer or if I will need medication and surgery. So, this is something I am going to be looking at next. From the MRI, I also found out I have what appears to be a Baker's Cyst behind my knee. For 2-3 months I have had numbness and tingling in my left leg, below the knee, so they are trying to figure out if it's because of the cyst or something else.
Wow...how pathetic this really is. My first time capturing the craziness of my medical-mystery-summer. Hopefully one day I will look back at this blog entry and laugh. The year I turn 38 really is turning out to be a doozy folks. My husband reminds me that it's all down hill and says, "Just wait until you're 40!" Thanks dear.
A few months ago I started drinking Shakeology daily, as well as blending fruits and power greens and I LOVE it. We bought a Vitamix in July and it's been awesome. My fave recipe is 2 cups of greens (chard, bok choy, kale, spinach), 1 cup pressed apple juice, 1 cup water, 2/3 cup frozen pineapple, 1 tbsp flax seed, 1 tsp chia seeds and some wheat grass. It's sooooo good. Considering I haven't been able to do any exercise, I have dropped 7 pounds this summer. I do have a half marathon I registered for months ago that I need to start training for, so hopefully if my cooperates I will be able to do that as soon as it cools down a little.

Big Daddy Update......
He works...a lot. The end.
Haha. Luke actually drops off all the kids in the morning so he gets to work close to 8am every morning. The beginning of the school year is always extra work but this year he has a new Asst. Principal. Hopefully things slow down for him soon and he is able to get home earlier.
Being the wonderful wife I am, I made an appt. for my old man to get his elbow checked after hearing him complaining about it long enough. Turns out he has tennis elbow. He elected for a shot of something deep into the elbow, that left him even MORE whiny for a few days. Thankfully it all kicked in within 3-4 days.
He and the boys are registered to do the Avengers 5K race at Disneyland, the day before my half marathon. This means they need to get their butts out the door and start training. Hopefully that will happen sooner than later so the Disney "sweeper" doesn't pick them up during the race. :)

That Stop Wasn't On My Itinerary....

So the Hogue's made it to Florida for our first official family vacation. It was Sawyer's first plane ride....and Simon's first plane ride that he can remember. We were excited....the boys were stoked. We had everything we needed! But it seems that Sawyer packed something with him that wasn't on our checklist: a big case of pneumonia. Yes, the little fella made it almost one whole day in Florida before he started heading downhill fast. Our 2nd day in Orlando we were in the Urgent Care south of Cocoa Beach. (By the way, to see a doctor more quickly, it helps if you vomit all over the waiting room in front of the receptionist. Little tip for ya) After chest x-rays they advised us to head to the ER in Melbourne, where they eventually admitted him to the hospital. So, we had 3 night deluxe accommadations at the Holmes Regional Medical Center. The little whipper snapper was a trooper though! The nurses loved him, thankfully, and made us all feel right at home. We were going to send postcards out with pictures of the hospital since we spent 40% of our trip there...but they didn't have any. Imagine that!Hmmm.....maybe its something they should consider.
