Run, Run, Run

About a month ago Luke and I finally decided to renew our gym membership.
This was waaaaaaaaay overdue.
On our first outing to the gym Luke and I dropped off the kids in the playroom and parted ways with a kiss!
Where do I go now I thought to myself.
I ended up on a treadmill hoping to take a walk and contemplate my options.
After a few brisk walk I turned up the pace to a jog.
It has been a long time since I ran anywhere.
Crazy enough, I ended up running/walking 3 miles in 40 minutes.
When I left the gym that morning I was looking forward to running again.
Very strange.
Six months ago I bought a pair of Nike Free 5.0 tennis shoes, at the recommendation of our corporate trainer at work. He was right, they are the BEST shoes I have ever worked out in. (Considering 2 years ago a podiatrist wanted to perform surgery on my funky feet due to high arches, I thought it was amazing that my ankles/feet didn't hurt after each workout). I give the shoes a thumbs up.
Moving on---After two weeks I was still looking forward to each run I could squeeze in at the gym. While in San Diego with the family there was an insert in the newspaper on running and found some interesting websites/facebok pages dedicated to marathons (www.runrocknroll.com). I saw a few advertisements for 5K runs and half marathons and I turned to Luke and said something astonishing:
I THINK I am going to try and do a half marathon sometime in the next year.
I am not sure what Luke thought about it, but I wondered if I should have opened my big mouth after only 3 weeks of going back to the gym.
Needless to say my husband has been VERY supportive. (Not supportive enough to enter a marathon with me.....) :)

I like to run in sleeveless shirts so instead of buying new ones, I cut the sleeves off of comfortable shirts I all ready had. I am so creative....and cheap.

On the way home this weekend we stopped by the Nike outlets in Tulare to buy school shoes. I ended up finding some neat stuff for running, including some socks that give arch support. (cool) I also ended up purchasing the "Nike + Ipod" sensor because I was absolutely certain it was compatible with the new shoes I had recently purchased. I couldn't wait to use it.

(This little thing fits under the cushion of your left shoe and connects to your Apple device)
Well--turns out the shoes I have are not compatible.
Shoot!
So, I took the contraption to work today to show a co-worker who is also a runner AND has a pair of compatible Nikes he just got for Father's Day. I got home from work this afternoon and was getting ready to to head to the gym with Luke when he surprised me.....
with a new pair of running shoes that would be compatible with my "Nike + Ipod" gadget.
This man is too much. I just wanted to squeeze him!!

My card he made me ( I think it might be my favorite of all time)

The shoes! Aren't they beautiful?!

We excitedly got everything linked up and working and headed to the gym.
I never thought I would be so anxious to exercise!
I ran 3.5 miles in 40 minutes. (40 minutes is kind of limit right now. I begin to get anxious and bored. Hopefully that gets better soon)
When we got home and sync'd my phone, the workout info sync'd to http://nikerunning.nike.com and charts it (...and all this other fancy stuff) So neat. I cannot wait to keep running and see how everything progresses.
In the meantime...a big, big, big kiss to my husband for spoiling me. You are too good to me! I love you.

You can do it Katie! A half marathon is totally do-able. Keep up the good work!

That Stop Wasn't On My Itinerary....

So the Hogue's made it to Florida for our first official family vacation. It was Sawyer's first plane ride....and Simon's first plane ride that he can remember. We were excited....the boys were stoked. We had everything we needed! But it seems that Sawyer packed something with him that wasn't on our checklist: a big case of pneumonia. Yes, the little fella made it almost one whole day in Florida before he started heading downhill fast. Our 2nd day in Orlando we were in the Urgent Care south of Cocoa Beach. (By the way, to see a doctor more quickly, it helps if you vomit all over the waiting room in front of the receptionist. Little tip for ya) After chest x-rays they advised us to head to the ER in Melbourne, where they eventually admitted him to the hospital. So, we had 3 night deluxe accommadations at the Holmes Regional Medical Center. The little whipper snapper was a trooper though! The nurses loved him, thankfully, and made us all feel right at home. We were going to send postcards out with pictures of the hospital since we spent 40% of our trip there...but they didn't have any. Imagine that!Hmmm.....maybe its something they should consider.
